Ghana Pledges Sustainable Funding for Statistical Services to Cut Donor Dependence

In a statement released after the launch of Ghana in Numbers 2025 in Accra, Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu confirmed that the government will provide sustainable funding for the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS). The commitment will cover key activities such as censuses, surveys and administrative data collection, marking a significant shift from the long‑standing reliance on donor resources.

Dr. Iddrisu said the move reflects the government’s recognition of reliable data as essential to national development and its readiness to take greater responsibility for financing official statistics. “Funding statistics largely with donor resources is going to be a thing of the past,” he stated.

The Ministry of Finance has also expressed support for a proposed new Statistics Bill, which aims to strengthen the legal framework governing the production of official statistics and enhance coordination across the national statistical system. The bill would provide the GSS with greater institutional independence.

In addition, the Service plans to update existing legislation to incorporate emerging developments such as artificial intelligence and geospatial technology, enabling faster data production and more relevant information for national planning and decision‑making.

With this commitment, the government hopes to secure a stable financial base for the GSS’s regular data collection activities, ensuring that Ghana can produce timely and accurate statistics without external dependence.
