Kumasi Communities to Face Planned Power Outages as GRIDCo Advances Transmission Line Upgrade

GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) announced that the 161kV Anwomaso‑Ahodwo (K1‑K2) Transmission Line Upgrade Project in Kumasi is now 70 % complete. The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition is overseeing the work, which is slated to finish by the end of November 2026.

To safely string transmission conductors on the towers, the companies will need to temporarily cut power to sections of the line. Residents and businesses along the route will experience planned outages from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 29, 2026. Work will not occur on weekends, and power will be shut down between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on the days when a particular section is being worked on.

ECG will release a detailed schedule listing affected communities and outage dates so that households and firms can prepare. GRIDCo and ECG urged patience and cooperation, acknowledging that the interruptions could disrupt daily life but are essential for the safe completion of the project.

Once finished, the upgraded line is expected to strengthen Kumasi’s electricity transmission network and improve power reliability across the Ashanti Region.
