Maxi Kwadwo Appiah, the New Patriotic Party’s Eastern Regional Coordinator for Persons with Disabilities, secured an injunction from the Osino District Magistrate Court to halt mining activities on land disputed by Bodwen Junior High School. The court ordered the defendants, their assigns, agents, workmen, relatives and anyone claiming through them to stay off the land, and directed that its nature and form should not be altered.

Appiah said he sought the order after discovering excavators working on the school’s property at night. “I told them the land belongs to the school. I told them they didn’t have any rights to use the school land. No law permits them to do so,” he told reporters. He alleged that the workers named a man known as Osofo and the younger brother of Fanteakwa South District Chief Executive Mercy Korang, identified as Boakye, as present at the site.

Appiah claimed Boakye insulted him, insisting that because his party was in power he could not stop the activities. He then pursued legal action, resulting in the injunction. He warned that the excavation had left a dangerous pit that could pose a serious threat to pupils and other children playing around the school premises. “The hole they have dug poses a serious risk of death to kids who might be playing around,” he said.
