A Wizz Air aircraft travelling from London Luton Airport to Sofia diverted to Budapest after a mid‑air bomb threat. The flight was escorted by a Hungarian Gripen fighter jet, which was provided by Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin‑Szendis.
The plane landed at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport at 12:09 local time, where authorities conducted the required security checks on the aircraft and passengers. A Wizz Air spokesperson confirmed that the inspection was completed and nothing was found.
Wizz Air said the aircraft would depart again shortly and that it is fully cooperating with the authorities, stressing that passenger and crew safety remains its highest priority. Ruszin‑Szendis noted that the jet returned to base after escorting the flight and that police took charge of the incident.
The flight, which departed Luton at 08:33 GMT and was due to arrive in Sofia at 13:25 local time, landed in Budapest 12 minutes earlier than scheduled. The airline will resume its journey to Sofia once clearance is obtained.
