On Sunday, November 1, 2026, Bernard Owiredu Donkor, an NPP communications team member and Akwatia native, declared his interest in contesting the constituency’s parliamentary seat during the party’s Thanksgiving Service and Mini Conference/Rally.
He said the NPP must present a candidate capable of reclaiming the seat from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), noting that experimentation in the 2025 by‑election did not yield results.
Owiredu Donkor will register his interest through the NPP’s online expression‑of‑interest portal, which opened on November 1, 2026, with a deadline of November 10, 2026, for aspirants to submit their expressions as part of preparations for the 2028 parliamentary primaries.
He recalled supporting NPP’s candidate Solomon Kwame Asumadu in the 2025 by‑election, which the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo won with 18,199 votes to Asumadu’s 15,235.
Owiredu Donkor hinted that Bediako, whom he described as a junior colleague in the legal profession, should cede the seat to him in the 2028 contest, so the two could work together to advance Akwatia’s development.
With the Akwatia seat having become vacant after the death of NPP MP Ernest Yaw Kumi in July 2025, the NPP faces a critical challenge to regain representation in Parliament.
Observers will watch how the party finalises its candidate list and whether Owiredu Donkor’s bid will secure the NPP’s position in the upcoming elections.
