GES Cancels November Mid‑Term Break to Recover Lost Teaching Hours

The Ghana Education Service (GES) announced on Monday, November 2, that the two‑day mid‑term break slated for basic schools on November 5 and 6 will be cancelled. Schools are directed to remain open and conduct normal academic activities on those dates to make up for instructional time lost during the recent nationwide teachers’ strike.

The strike, launched on September 25 by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre‑Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), halted classroom teaching for almost two weeks. It was suspended on October 9 after talks with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment and the Council of State. Teachers returned to classrooms on October 12 following an agreement on timelines to address some of their demands.

GES urged teachers, students, parents and guardians to note the revised arrangement and ensure pupils report to school as scheduled on the two days. The Service said the cancellation is part of efforts to recover lost hours and maintain continuity of academic activities.

Stakeholders are called to cooperate to observe the new schedule and prevent further disruption to the academic calendar.
