The Parliamentary Select Committee on Economy and Development has commended the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for its strong oversight of Ghana's downstream petroleum sector and its substantial contribution to national economic growth.
Speaking during a working visit to the NPA headquarters, Committee Chairman Eric Afful described the Authority as a critical institution that keeps the nation's economy running smoothly while making significant contributions to Ghana's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The visit allowed committee members to engage directly with NPA Chief Executive Godwin Kudzo Tameklo and the executive management team. The engagement aimed to provide lawmakers with first-hand insight into the Authority's daily operations, regulatory mandate, and ongoing policy reforms.
Afful clarified that the visit was part of the Committee's routine parliamentary oversight, following up on prior discussions to verify operational details. He emphasized that the Committee views its relationship with the regulator as a partnership.
"We are not here as policemen, but to collaborate with the Authority," Afful stated, while praising the NPA's contribution to national development.
In response, NPA Chief Executive Godwin Kudzo Tameklo expressed gratitude for the visit, calling it a clear demonstration of Parliament's commitment to fortifying the country's downstream petroleum industry.
"Today, the Authority is honoured to receive members of this august Committee of Parliament. I have always maintained that the work of Members of Parliament is not a joke, and so today we have opened our doors for verification, so it does not become only the CEO's words," Tameklo said.
Tameklo reaffirmed the NPA's pledge to maintain a safe, efficient, and resilient petroleum downstream sector, highlighting that the session offered a platform to showcase recent achievements and structural reforms.
Following the discussions, members of the parliamentary committee toured key operational facilities at the NPA headquarters. Technical teams briefed the delegation on departmental functions and demonstrated the systems that power the Authority's regulatory oversight across the nation's petroleum supply chain.
