In a highly contested National Democratic Congress (NDC) chairmanship race in the Asawase Constituency, Mustapha Mohammed Tahiru—also known as Chairman Ayariga—was declared the winner after polling 1,134 votes. The election, held on Sunday, was marked by intense campaigning but ultimately remained peaceful, with no post‑results challenges filed by the Electoral Commission.
Tahiru, the protocol officer for the Asawase Member of Parliament and the Interior Minister, faced opposition from Faisal Dauda, popularly called Chairman Concern, who received 525 votes, and Musah Abubakar, known as Chairman Mutum, who garnered 177 votes. The contest had been framed as a showdown between Team Muntaka, led by Tahiru, and Team Concern, headed by Dauda.
Delegates, candidates and supporters aligned themselves with their respective teams, yet the atmosphere stayed orderly thanks to a heavy police presence. A total of 1,954 delegates voted for 62 candidates across 16 positions, with the Deputy Youth Organiser role remaining uncontested.
Following his swearing‑in, Tahiru pledged to unite the fractured factions and focus on securing victory in the 2028 general elections, emphasizing the importance of engaging the constituency’s majority youth. He also thanked the Interior Minister and the Asawase MP for their support, vowing to deliver development projects to the area.
The newly elected Vice‑Chairman, Samuel Kolebil Duabuuri, who had no clear affiliation before the polls, promised to bring both camps together for the party’s progress. The election outcome is expected to reshape the political dynamics within Asawase as the NDC gears up for the next national contest.
