On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) agreed to suspend its strike after a meeting with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the Vice‑Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU‑G). The decision aims to resolve the concerns that had prompted the industrial action.
In a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, the parties said TUTAG would consult its general membership and immediately suspend the strike while continuing to address the outstanding issues. The strike had centred on three main points: non‑payment of staff engaged on post‑retirement contracts, a directive requiring a PhD for the promotion of Assistant Lecturers to Lecturers, and the classification of academic librarians as academic staff.
Regarding post‑retirement contracts, the parties acknowledged that the matter rests with the Minister for Finance. GTEC has agreed to facilitate a meeting involving the minister, the vice‑chancellors and other parties by November 14, 2026, to work toward a resolution. GTEC also agreed to exempt affected staff who held the rank of Assistant Lecturer or Assistant Research Fellow and met their universities’ promotion criteria before July 31, 2025, from the PhD requirement for progression to Lecturer.
On the classification of academic librarians, GTEC indicated it was not opposed in principle to TUTAG’s position. The parties agreed that the National President of the University Librarians Association should submit a technical paper for consideration and implementation. All parties reaffirmed their commitment to continued dialogue and collaboration to maintain industrial harmony and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of teaching and learning in technical universities.
What follows is a pause in industrial action, with the expectation that the agreed meetings and technical submissions will lead to a lasting resolution. Stakeholders will monitor the progress of the November 14 meeting and the librarian technical paper for further developments.
