The Ghana Prisons Service has stated that Bernard Antwi‑Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi, is well and safe in its custody at Nsawam Prison. The announcement follows his claim that some inmates had tried to poison him, a matter the authorities say they are investigating.
Chief Public Relations Officer Abdul Latif said the allegation was brought to the prison’s attention by Wontumi’s spokesperson, not directly by the former chairman. He added that investigations would determine the truth and, if warranted, the steps to prevent future incidents.
Latif reassured that there is no cause for alarm regarding Wontumi’s security, adding that the prison follows the same rules for all inmates. He denied that Wontumi is receiving special treatment, noting the facility’s overcrowding—its capacity of 851 inmates is now exceeded by more than 3,000.
When asked about claims that five inmates had been moved following the alleged poisoning attempt, Latif said he could not confirm the relocation. The Prisons Service continues to monitor the situation and will update as investigations progress.
