Mavis Hawa Koomson, the National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, has demanded that Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster Zakaria Abdulai be brought before the courts over serious sexual abuse claims involving 19 female students.
Speaking on Eyewitness News after a NPP Women’s Wing demonstration in Obuasi, Koomson questioned why Abdulai had not been prosecuted and criticised the slow pace of the police investigation.
She highlighted that Abdulai had been granted bail for a police inquiry rather than remanded, asking whether his political affiliation with the ruling NDC was influencing the process.
“Zakaria Abdullahi is going about doing his normal duty. Is that because he is a member of the NDC, the ruling party? Is that why he’s just roaming about without anybody taking him through the court process?” she asked.
Addressing investigators, Koomson pressed how long the police would take to complete their work, noting that a student had already testified in the case.
“There is a girl who has testified to this case. What are we waiting for? What kind of evidence do you want? How long is it going to take us to get this evidence?” she said.
She also questioned the credibility of the allegations being dismissed, arguing that the number of students involved and the potential trauma they faced warranted urgent attention.
“Do we know the trauma these girls are going through? And so what will they gain from telling that lie?” she added.
Koomson urged authorities to expedite the process and ensure that the allegations were dealt with through the appropriate legal channels.
“Let’s fast‑track the process and give these young ladies befitting justice in this country. Let me have hope for once that the citizens and the leaders of this country care about the young ones,” she said.
The headmaster has been interdicted following the allegations, while police investigations continue.
