President John Dramani Mahama announced on Friday, November 6, 2026, that the government will purchase 100 new ambulances and procure parts to restore 100 broken‑down vehicles. The move aims to increase the fleet available for patient transport and strengthen the health system’s emergency response capacity.
Speaking at the 68th Annual General Conference of the Ghana Medical Association, Mahama said the intervention would provide a combined 200 ambulances once the new vehicles are acquired and the damaged ones repaired. He added that the plan is part of broader measures to expand emergency bed capacity at major hospitals and improve patient referral coordination.
The president emphasized that the initiative is intended to strengthen the health system’s ability to respond to patients who require urgent medical attention. The procurement and repair programme is expected to fill critical gaps in Ghana’s emergency care delivery.
