The Telecel Ghana Foundation kicked off its 2026 Homecoming initiative at Shai Osudoku District Hospital in Dodowa, clearing the outstanding medical bills of 29 patients who had completed treatment but could not afford to leave the hospital. The move is part of a broader plan to discharge more than 500 patients across 16 government health facilities nationwide between 4 November and 7 December 2026.

In addition to settling bills, the Foundation provided National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration and renewal for 120 people, ensuring they maintain sustainable access to healthcare beyond the immediate intervention. The initiative is the largest Homecoming effort the Foundation has ever undertaken since its launch in 2011.

Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana, explained that the Homecoming programme exists to prevent financial hardship from keeping recovered patients in hospital. “No patient should remain in hospital simply because they are unable to pay their medical bills,” she said. “Through Homecoming, we work with selected government hospitals and the Department of Social Welfare to identify and support patients who are medically fit for discharge but cannot return home because of outstanding bills.”

Dr Alexander Adjei, Medical Director of Shai Osudoku District Hospital, welcomed the partnership, noting that limited resources often hamper the hospital’s ability to meet growing patient needs. “Healthcare delivery thrives on strong partnerships,” he said. “We are grateful to the Telecel Ghana Foundation for supporting patients through the Homecoming initiative and for providing essential equipment to strengthen healthcare delivery at our facility.”

Florence, a pregnant beneficiary, shared her relief after the Foundation settled her bill: “All I wanted was to return home, but my family and I did not have the money to pay the bill. When I heard that the Telecel Ghana Foundation had settled my bill, I felt a heavy burden lift off me.” She added that she could now focus on a healthy pregnancy and return to her family.

The launch marks the start of a nationwide rollout that will cover the Southern, Northern and Middle belts, with the Southern Belt phase continuing at Anfoega Hospital, Eastern Regional Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Kwesimintsim Hospital before moving to selected facilities in the other regions.

The 2026 Homecoming initiative is implemented in partnership with the Ghana Health Service, participating government health facilities and The Medical Reformist, underscoring Telecel Ghana Foundation’s commitment to helping recovered patients return home with dignity and strengthening healthcare delivery across the country.
