The government has announced major plans to develop a permanent, comprehensive solution to the recurring flood crisis paralyzing Accra and other vulnerable communities across the nation.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has officially directed the Ministry of Works, Housing, and Water Resources to design a definitive flood mitigation framework.
The directive follows recent severe flooding that resulted in fatalities, displaced families, shattered local businesses, and caused extensive damage to vital public infrastructure.
Addressing the House, Dr. Ato Forson highlighted that the administration had launched immediate relief operations following the disasters, which included emergency site visits, the release of rapid-response funds, and coordinated national clean-up drives.
However, emphasizing the need to move beyond temporary fixes, the Finance Minister confirmed that long-term financing for the new permanent flood control initiative will be formally captured in the 2027 Budget and integrated into the government's Medium-Term Expenditure Framework.
