Dr. John Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, unveiled a national programme to equip public universities with solar power systems during a meeting with Vice Chancellors across the country. The initiative aims to let academic institutions meet part of their electricity needs through renewable energy, reducing dependence on the national grid and improving campus energy efficiency.
Jinapor said the government will provide solar installations for academic facilities and install all‑in‑one solar‑powered streetlights on university campuses. The move is expected to lower electricity consumption for campus lighting and offer a cleaner, potentially cheaper alternative to conventional street lighting.
Beyond infrastructure, the minister highlighted the strategic role of universities in Ghana’s energy transition, urging research, innovation and knowledge exchange to support the country’s shift to a greener energy system and broader economic transformation.
