The National Security Council Secretariat announced on Tuesday that 16 suspects, both Ghanaian and foreign, have been arrested in a sweeping operation aimed at dismantling organised counterfeit currency networks.
Intelligence‑led raids were carried out between 12 June and 24 July 2026 across the Greater Accra Region and adjacent districts, targeting syndicates involved in the large‑scale printing, possession and distribution of counterfeit Ghanaian and foreign notes.
Six coordinated raids on the syndicates’ primary operational hubs led to the seizure of four printing hubs, four printing machines, six vehicles and two motorcycles used for transport. The operation recovered US$543,000, GH¢196,600 and CFA60,000 in ready‑to‑spend counterfeit notes, and large quantities of unprinted coupons worth US$5,293,500, GH¢19,553,700 and CFA623,550,000.
All suspects and seized physical and digital evidence have been transferred to the Bureau of National Intelligence for forensic examination and formal prosecution. The case dockets have been submitted to the Office of the Attorney‑General and Ministry of Justice, and proceedings are underway at the Accra High Court, General Jurisdiction.
The crackdown is part of ongoing efforts by security and intelligence agencies to disrupt criminal networks that threaten Ghana’s financial and economic systems.
