The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that several roads in the Central Business District will be closed in December to provide extra trading space for market vendors ahead of Christmas.
During the November session of the national sanitation exercise, Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey told traders that the move aims to give those without permanent shops the chance to sell more goods during the busy period and increase their sales.
Allotey revealed that the stretch from the Cocoa Board area to Kantamanto would be shut, following a directive from Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga. He urged traders to use the opportunity to maximise their earnings this December.
"We want you to make more sales this December than you have ever done. The Local Government Minister has asked us to block some of the roads to create space for traders who do not have shops to sell their goods. The stretch from Cocoa Board to Kantamanto will be closed," he said.
Traders operating at bus stops were also instructed to vacate those spots before Monday to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
