Ghana’s efforts to build sustainable healthcare financing received a major boost following a GH₵1 million donation by BOSTenergies to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. The contribution stands as one of the most significant private-sector commitments to the national health initiative since its inception.
The funds are set to relieve the severe financial pressure on thousands of Ghanaian families struggling to afford specialized, high-cost medical interventions.
Investing in National Health, Not Charity
Presenting the cheque to the Fund’s Administrator, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, the Managing Director of BOSTenergies, Afetsi Awoonor, highlighted that supporting public health is one of the most vital investments a company can make for the country’s future.
"The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is providing hope to people who had almost given up, and we are proud to support this noble national initiative," Mr. Awoonor stated.
Framing the gesture as an investment in human lives rather than mere corporate philanthropy, Mr. Awoonor issued a direct challenge to the broader corporate community, urging business leaders across Ghana to join the movement so that no patient is turned away from medical care due to an inability to pay.
Direct Relief for High-Criticality Interventions
Receiving the donation, Ms. Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku expressed deep gratitude, emphasizing that the GH₵1 million would be deployed immediately to assist patients awaiting critical treatments.
Key areas targeted for support include:
Oncology: Chemotherapy and specialized cancer care.
Renal Care: Ongoing dialysis for kidney patients.
Surgeries: High-risk procedures, including heart and brain surgeries.
"This generous donation will translate directly into lives saved," Ms. Darko-Opoku said. "It will help us support more patients requiring specialized treatment for chronic diseases, provide hope to families who have exhausted every option, and strengthen our efforts to ensure that quality healthcare is accessible to all Ghanaians."
Maximizing Impact: Local Care & Tax Incentives
Ms. Darko-Opoku reinforced the Fund's strict commitment to local healthcare capacity building, noting that the initiative exclusively finances treatments within Ghana.
She pointed out that the cost required to sponsor a single patient for medical care abroad could be used to save approximately 20 patients in-country, making local intervention far more sustainable and impactful.
She also reminded corporate entities that all contributions made to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund are 100 percent tax-deductible, allowing organizations to fulfill their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals while optimizing their tax obligations.
