In the early hours of Tuesday, November 3, 2026, a team of four Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officers patrolling the Hamile Sector of the Upper West Region encountered an unusual sound along an unapproved border route. The officers intercepted a man transporting a load on a tricycle, which the rider attempted to flee from as they approached to inspect its contents.

According to a statement released by the Service, the load exploded while the officers were trying to stop the rider. The blast killed the tricycle rider and injured two officers. One of the injured officers later succumbed to his injuries, while the other is receiving emergency care at Nandom Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

The GIS confirmed that the Sector Commander and a team visited the scene, which has since been secured. Investigations have begun to establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion, with the Service assuring the public that border security operations in the Hamile Sector remain fully operational.

The Service expressed condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the deceased officer and urged the media and public to respect the privacy of the affected families, refraining from circulating unverified information, images or videos related to the incident. Further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
