Asante Akyem North MP Remains in Dutch Custody Ahead of Extradition Hearing

Ghana’s Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, continues to be detained in the Netherlands after two bail applications were rejected. The MP was arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on May 10, 2026, following an extradition request from the United States linked to alleged romance scams and money‑laundering offences.

Parliament confirmed the detention and the Ghanaian diplomatic mission in The Hague has been involved. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said consular assistance was being provided, including visits to the MP while he remains in custody.

Frimpong’s lawyers contend that the U.S. magistrate court’s warrant was for questioning only and did not carry formal criminal charges. Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP Rockson‑Nelson Dafeamekpor reported that both the initial bail application and a subsequent appeal failed to secure release.

"We have failed to secure bail for him in respect of the two applications that were brought before the court for the tribunal to sit. And so he’s still in custody," Dafeamekpor said. He added that the substantive extradition hearing is scheduled for November 18, 2026, unless unforeseen circumstances arise.

He dismissed rumours that Frimpong had already been transferred to the United States, stating that the extradition process is still ongoing in the Netherlands. The November hearing will determine whether the legal requirements for his transfer have been met.

Frimpong remains in custody as the proceedings continue, having not yet been convicted of the alleged offences.
