The Bono Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) seized more than 57,000 pieces of unregistered baby diapers during a three‑day market surveillance exercise in Sunyani, Berekum and Dormaa Municipalities. The operation targeted five shops where the diapers were packed in bales and sold without FDA certification.
Regulatory Officer Charles Opoku Gyamfi explained that the exercise aimed to rid the market of unregistered, expired, fake and unwholesome cosmetic products and other consumables. He said the FDA’s enforcement team, supported by police, also intensified public sensitisation to encourage dealers and traders to register their products and to store them hygienically.
Madam Akua Amponsaa Owusu, the Bono Regional Head of the FDA, warned that unregistered diapers pose a public health risk and that the Authority could not guarantee their safety. She urged consumers to verify FDA registration numbers and label information before buying and warned that retailers selling unregistered products would face prosecution.
With affordability driving consumer preference for cheaper, unregistered diapers, the FDA’s crackdown seeks to protect infant health and promote compliance among market traders.
