Bank of Ghana Launches Economic Journalism Award with Global Training Opportunities

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) unveiled a new award scheme at the 30th Ghana Journalists Association Media Awards on Saturday, November 7, 2026, aimed at recognising excellence in economic and financial journalism. The Governor’s Economic and Financial Story of the Year Award, announced by Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama in a speech at the Palms Convention Centre, La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, Accra, promises winners a range of international exposure and professional development.

Recipients will receive sponsorship to attend either the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Spring Meetings or Annual Meetings, a laptop and a one‑year internet data subscription. In addition, the package includes fellowships with the Thomson Foundation, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and accredited local training centres. Scholars will also gain scholarships for further studies in media, communications and related fields, and access to exchange programmes with global media houses such as Bloomberg and Reuters.

Governor Asiama said the objective was “to invest in the development of journalists who can continue to elevate the quality of economic and financial reporting in Ghana.” He added that the media plays a crucial role in helping the public understand complex issues such as monetary policy, inflation, financial sector reforms, exchange rate movements and digital financial innovations. “It is through accurate, balanced, and insightful reporting that these issues are translated into information citizens can understand and use,” he remarked.

The award is part of BoG’s broader effort to encourage specialised reporting on economic and financial matters and promote greater public understanding of developments that affect businesses, households and the wider economy. By equipping journalists with advanced skills and international exposure, the Bank hopes to strengthen transparency, credibility and accountability in its communication with the public.

Winners will be announced at the next GJA Media Awards ceremony, with the Bank looking forward to fostering a new generation of journalists capable of delivering clear, insightful coverage of Ghana’s economic landscape.
