GJA Criticises Sam George Over Media Closure Comments

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has publicly rebuked Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George over statements made on November 2, 2026, that suggested the possibility of shutting down certain radio stations.

At the 30th GJA Media Awards in Accra, President Albert Dwumfour described the minister’s comments as "unfortunate" and urged that the Association continue to speak out whenever journalists’ rights, welfare or livelihoods are at risk.

Dwumfour noted that the GJA’s engagement with President John Dramani Mahama was a professional duty, not a partisan act, and that the Association would not remain silent when media closures could abruptly end employment for journalists.

The minister had said he would close politically and religiously affiliated media houses if given the authority, a claim that the GJA said could jeopardise the precarious conditions of many media workers.

Dwumfour praised President Mahama for intervening within two hours of the GJA’s appeal, issuing clemency and highlighting the need for transparent, fair and proportionate regulation of the broadcasting industry.

GJA will continue to engage the President, ministers, Parliament, regulators and media owners to safeguard journalists’ safety, welfare and professional independence.
