TraffiTech: Private Operator’s Profit Motive Could Undermine Road Safety

Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has warned that the profit motive of the private company involved in the rollout of the TraffiTech initiative could conflict with the government’s road safety objectives.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Dr Zaato said the company’s commercial interests could influence how the system is operated, particularly in relation to the fines imposed on motorists.

He argued that while the government’s primary objective is to improve road safety by regulating speeding, the private company could seek to maximise its profits by increasing fines.

“Herein lies the real or the potential clash between their profit motive and the government’s social service or public safety or security motives. The private sector may, in an attempt to maximise their profits, quickly make sure that they rather increase the fines,” he said.
