Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, co‑chair of the New Patriotic Party’s Energy Committee, urged the government to sack Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka‑Mubarak and the Narcotics Control Commission chief following a wave of cocaine seizures involving consignments tied to Ghana.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, November 7, Mr Nsafoah Poku said the recent interceptions – including a large shipment seized in Lebanon – revealed serious gaps in Ghana’s security and narcotics enforcement.
He warned that the scale and frequency of the seizures pointed to organised networks moving drugs through Ghana, and that merely arresting traffickers was insufficient. “The only reason why the Lebanon cocaine seizure happened is that they have a network of people working around that delivery,” he said. “So now, when we say that the security system needs to be held accountable, not only does Muntaka have to be sacked, but the NACOC head also has to be sacked because, aside from arresting individuals, we have not raided any warehouse.”
Mr Nsafoah Poku added that Ghana had seen large quantities of cocaine intercepted at international destinations such as Australia, Dunkirk and Beirut, and that the country was now “shipping out cocaine in large quantities.” He called for a comprehensive review of the country’s drug‑trafficking counter‑measures.
The call comes amid growing concern over Ghana’s role in regional drug trafficking routes and the effectiveness of its law‑enforcement agencies. The Interior Ministry has yet to respond to the demands.
