Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, accused the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration of neglecting the constituency’s roads during its eight‑year tenure. He said that repeated appeals to the former government to rehabilitate the Korle‑Bu road, a vital route for ambulances transporting patients to the Korle‑Bu Teaching Hospital, were ignored.
Speaking after inspecting the ongoing rehabilitation works, Dr Vanderpuije noted that the project was finally addressing long‑standing road and drainage challenges in the area. “The need for this Korle‑Bu to receive some attention has been long in coming. Even during the NPP era, I pleaded that we do something, and it was never done. Ablekuma South was totally neglected by the NPP,” he said.
He added that while some road work had begun during the NPP term, it was left unfinished. “We started some roads during our term, but they were all neglected. Due to the Roads Minister’s commitment, we’re getting it done. The drains have also been neglected; we’re working on it. Motorists are enjoying the road; the potholes leading to Korle‑Bu have been repaired,” he explained.
The MP’s comments come as the constituency’s residents and health workers express frustration over the delayed infrastructure improvements that directly impact emergency services. The current road rehabilitation is now underway, with the Roads Minister reportedly overseeing the project to ensure completion.
Going forward, the MP urged the current administration to maintain momentum on the road and drainage works, emphasizing the importance of timely interventions for public safety and health outcomes.
