University of Ghana recorded an impressive 23‑medal haul at the 12th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games in Cairo, Egypt, marking its best performance since 2022 in Nairobi.
The 2026 edition saw the university win 10 gold medals, eight silver medals and five bronze medals across athletics, badminton and tennis. In men’s athletics, golds were taken in the long jump, 110m hurdles, 400m, 4×100m relay, 400m hurdles and 4×400m relay. Women added three golds in the javelin, 200m and 4×400m relay, while a mixed‑relay 400m event added a fourth gold, bringing the total to ten.
Silver medals were earned in men’s 5000m, 100m, women’s 800m, shot put, 4×100m relay and 1500m, plus a silver in men’s doubles badminton. Bronze medals came from men’s high jump, men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles tennis, and men’s singles badminton.
UG’s haul of 23 medals places it at the top of the overall standings, underscoring the university’s depth across multiple sports disciplines. The achievement follows a 2022 performance where UG won 16 medals, including four golds in athletics and four silvers in racket sports.
Looking ahead, the university plans to build on this success by investing further in coaching and facilities to sustain its competitive edge at future continental events.
