The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee (EXCO) voted unanimously on Friday, 30 October to bring the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) back to its biennial schedule. The decision overturns the previous year’s move to a four‑year cycle, restoring the tournament’s traditional rhythm of every two years.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe had earlier signalled that the governing body would reconsider the extension. He announced the potential reassessment at the CAF Strategy Conference in Cabo Verde, held from 7 to 9 October 2026.
The new resolution confirms that AFCON will once again be staged every two years, ending the proposed four‑year interval. The competition remains one of Africa’s biggest sporting events, drawing national teams from across the continent to contest the continental title.
With the return to a biennial format, CAF aims to preserve the tournament’s competitive intensity and fan engagement. The decision is expected to shape the scheduling of future qualifiers and national team preparations.
