Two persons have been confirmed dead and eight others injured, three critically following a road traffic crash at Dompoase, near Komenda on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway on Friday evening.
The fatal incident involved a Toyota Hiace mini-bus, with registration number AS 6145-24, carrying ten passengers.
Swerve to Avoid Head-On Collision
According to preliminary findings, the accident was triggered when an unidentified vehicle traveling from Takoradi toward Cape Coast attempted a dangerous overtake.
In a desperate bid to avoid a head-on collision with the oncoming vehicle, the driver of the Toyota Hiace veered off his lane and slammed into a broken-down truck (registration number GN 2491-14) stationary along the road.
Fire Service Response and Extrication
The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Divisional Officer Grade II (DO II) Abdul Wasiu Hudu, confirmed the incident in an official statement.
He stated that the Komenda Fire Station dispatched a rescue team after receiving a distress call at approximately 6:55 p.m., arriving at the crash site by 7:10 p.m.
"Personnel found one person dead at the scene, while another victim, who was trapped in the mangled vehicle, was extricated but later pronounced dead," DO II Hudu confirmed.
Victims Conveyed to Hospital
Eight surviving occupants sustained varying degrees of injury, with three listed in critical condition.
Personnel from the National Ambulance Service rushed all eight injured victims to the Elmina Polyclinic, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Investigations into the crash and efforts to identify the driver of the overtaking vehicle remain ongoing.
