Cybercrime, Cocaine Trafficking Threaten Ghana’s Global Image – Dr Mireku

International Relations scholar Dr Nana Yaw Mireku cautioned that rising cybercrime and cocaine trafficking connected to Ghana may tarnish the nation’s global reputation and weaken its diplomatic clout. The concerns follow reports of foreign cybercrime groups operating from Ghana and a recent seizure of 46.7 kilogrammes of cocaine at Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut on October 31, 2026, consignments that were linked to the country.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, November 7, Dr Mireku urged the government and law‑enforcement agencies to step up efforts to curb these activities and safeguard Ghana’s international image. He highlighted that fraudsters from other African nations, particularly Nigeria, are allegedly using Ghana as a base, creating a negative perception abroad.

Dr Mireku added that the country’s association with cocaine trafficking only compounds the reputational damage and threatens Ghana’s diplomatic standing. “I think that Ghana is not scoring a very positive image, because if we realise for some months, the country has been out there for hosting internet fraud activities. Fraudsters are using Ghana as a safe zone… And only to compound it with issues of cocaine, you know, it’s not giving Ghana a very good diplomatic image or capital,” he said.
