President John Dramani Mahama has ordered a GH¢2 per litre reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel, taking effect for one month starting Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
The temporary intervention is intended to relieve pressure on commercial transport operators, lower logistical costs for businesses dependent on diesel, and prevent a ripple effect of price increases across goods and services.
The measure marks the second time this year the government has adjusted fuel margins to absorb global price shocks, following a similar reduction implemented in April.
Cabinet Approval and NPA Mandate
Announcing the decision in Accra on Monday, August 3, 2026, the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that the policy directive received full Cabinet approval.
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has been instructed to implement the reduction with immediate effect and issue operational guidelines to petroleum service providers and retailers ahead of the upcoming pricing window.
"The intervention is intended to prevent another round of transport fare increases, ease pressure on the cost of living, and reduce the impact of higher fuel prices on households and businesses," Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated.
Response to Global Market Trends
According to the presidency, the government initiated the price intervention following an assessment of recent developments in the international petroleum market and their potential strain on the domestic economy.
In an official statement, the Presidency assured the public that government will continue to monitor global energy trends closely and introduce additional measures if required to protect consumers and safeguard economic stability.
