A University of Ghana study released on September 17 found that 74.2% of 889 New Patriotic Party stakeholders surveyed expect former Subin MP Eugene Boakye Antwi to win the party’s National General Secretary election on October 3, 2026.
Led by Dr Chris Atadika, the research measured preferences for both the General Secretary and National Chairman races. 657 respondents (74.2%) backed Boakye Antwi for the secretary role, while 223 (25.1%) favoured incumbent Justin Frimpong Kodua and six (0.7%) mentioned Sylvester Tetteh.
When asked which candidate could help the NPP win the 2028 general election, 60.1% cited Boakye Antwi and 39.2% chose Frimpong Kodua. Boakye Antwi also topped name‑recognition polls, with 82.7% of respondents identifying him when asked to name candidates for the secretary position, compared with 13% for Frimpong Kodua.
For the National Chairman position, Boakye Agyarko led with 60.7% of respondents, followed by John Boadu (33.5%) and Paul Afoko (5.9%).
Dr Atadika highlighted that respondents valued good communication skills, boldness, the ability to secure a 2028 victory, and unifying qualities. “One that came up top was one who had good communication skills, one who was bold, one who has the ability to ensure a win in 2028, one who is a unifier, one who understands the plight of the people,” he said.
The researchers cautioned that the findings reflect expectations of the surveyed respondents and should not be taken as an independent prediction of the October 3 election outcome.
