President John Dramani Mahama ordered the creation of an inter‑agency task force on Thursday, September 17, to develop a detailed roadmap aimed at preventing drug trafficking through Ghana’s borders. The directive follows a meeting chaired by the President with security chiefs, prompted by recent large‑scale cocaine seizures linked to Ghana, including nearly 3.9 tonnes seized by French customs from a container shipped from the country.
The task force has been given a two‑week deadline to submit its recommendations. It will build on the meeting’s review of investigations into recent narcotics cases through Ghana’s ports and the existing security structures and systems.
During the session, the President was informed that ten individuals, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, are currently under investigation. The meeting also called for new measures to strengthen detection and prevention systems at the country’s borders.
The forthcoming roadmap will outline concrete steps to bolster Ghana’s capacity to intercept illicit drugs and safeguard its borders. The government is expected to unveil the plan shortly, with further actions to follow based on its findings.
