Nigeria secured a victory in an international arbitration case when a tribunal dismissed a $400 million claim lodged by Sunrise Power and Transmission over the long‑delayed Mambilla hydroelectric project, Attorney‑General Lateef Fagbemi announced on Tuesday.
The ruling, issued on September 17, clears a significant legal obstacle that has stalled the 3,050‑megawatt hydropower scheme for nearly two decades. With the claim removed, the project could move forward, rekindling hopes for Nigeria’s biggest hydroelectric endeavour.
Sunrise Power and Transmission had sought compensation for delays and cost overruns, but the tribunal found the claim unsubstantiated. The decision is seen as a positive step for Nigeria’s energy sector, which has been seeking to diversify its power mix and increase generation capacity.
