Nana Otu Darko of Accra FM, a subsidiary of the Class Media Group, has filed his nomination papers for the National Deputy Communications Officer position within the National Democratic Congress (NDC). During a brief statement after submitting the forms, Mr Otu Darko outlined two flagship initiatives he intends to pursue if elected.
First, he proposes the creation of a Communicators Fund to provide institutional financial support to party communicators and serial callers who often struggle with monetary constraints while promoting the NDC agenda. “There is a desire among our communicators to sell the agenda of the NDC, but there are times that practically or pragmatically, they are financially unstable,” he said. “I think there should be an institutionalised fund of a sort to take care of them.”
Second, Mr Otu Darko has suggested establishing a commercial television station owned by the NDC, describing it as one of the major projects he would pursue if he wins the post. He cited his background as a journalist and political communicator as the foundation for his confidence in handling the party’s communications machinery in government.
“I come in as somebody with much experience as a journalist. With all humility, permit me to say that I talk for a living. So speaking on behalf of a political party like the NDC is what I have done with the passage of time,” he said. “I come to this table of communication bureau with so much experiential knowledge and I believe that there is a wide difference between communicating for a party in opposition and raising defensible mechanisms to salvage a political party in power.”
The NDC has yet to announce whether it will endorse Mr Otu Darko’s candidacy. The party’s internal processes will determine the final nominee for the deputy communications officer role as the election campaign gains momentum.
