Frank Annoh‑Dompreh Demands Explanations Over Nsawam Waste Plan

Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam‑Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh‑Dompreh, called for a briefing in Parliament on Friday after reports that the government intends to move waste from Agbogbloshie to a new facility in Nsawam.

He asked why the area was chosen when a major waste treatment plant already operates at Amasaman, and urged the Majority Leader to have the minister responsible for local government appear before the House to explain the policy.

Mr Annoh‑Dompreh said he had previously raised the issue with the Majority Leader and stressed that residents’ concerns must be taken into account before decisions that could affect environmental and public health are made.

"Why is it that Amasaman has a big waste treatment plant and you jump Amasaman and bring all the waste to his home? Why? What is my wrong?" he asked.

The MP also rejected what he described as attempts to intimidate him for opposing the proposed relocation, declaring, "You cannot intimidate me. You cannot intimidate me." He said he would continue to demand answers on behalf of his constituents.

The intervention follows reported opposition from residents of the affected community, who addressed the media last month over the proposal, raising concerns about the potential consequences of receiving waste transported from Agbogbloshie. The Jospong Group of Companies also reportedly intervened after the community raised its concerns.

Observers say the debate highlights the need for clear communication and community engagement in Ghana’s waste management strategies.
