Nanumba South District Gives 133 PWDs GH¢63,000 Livelihood Package

The Nanumba South District Assembly in the Northern Region announced that 133 persons with disabilities (PWDs) received a combined cash and goods package worth GH¢63,000 to improve their livelihoods. Beneficiaries were handed industrial sewing machines, deep freezers, livestock and cash grants ranging from GH¢1,500 to GH¢2,000 to support their own businesses.

The items were presented at a ceremony in Wulensi on Friday, September 4. District Chief Executive Musah Abdul Rashid said the intervention was part of the government’s social protection programme and aimed at reducing poverty among PWDs, especially those outside the formal sector of employment.

Mr Rashid urged the beneficiaries to use the equipment and funds productively and highlighted that the allocation for PWDs under the District Assemblies Common Fund had increased from three to five per cent, signalling a stronger commitment to their welfare and economic empowerment.

He also warned caregivers, particularly those assisting blind persons, against taking an unfair share of the funds meant for the beneficiaries. The District Director of Social Welfare, Brose Harmon Muftaw, said the PWDs Disbursement Committee would monitor the use of the items and funds.

Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude, saying the support would positively impact their lives. Meanwhile, the Mental Health Unit of the Wulensi District Hospital received GH¢26,995 to purchase detergents and other essential supplies, a donation that a nurse at the unit welcomed as a boost to service delivery.
