MTN Ghana has upgraded its Savannahfest community football gala, inviting 16 teams from across the Northern Region to vie for the top prize. The move follows last year’s four‑team format, signalling a major scale‑up of the event.
Richard Asamani, MTN Ghana’s Area Sales Manager for the Northern Region, explained that football was chosen as the centerpiece because of its universal appeal and its power to bring people together. He said the expanded tournament will foster unity, support community development and provide a stage for young players to showcase their skills.

“Last year we only had four teams, but this year we have 16 teams competing for the ultimate prize,” Asamani told reporters. He added that sustained investment in grassroots football could produce players who might one day represent Ghana internationally.
The gala is part of Savannahfest, an annual festival that celebrates MTN Ghana’s presence in northern communities. This year’s edition coincides with the company’s 30th anniversary and includes a music festival, a health walk, free health screenings at Jubilee Park and a clean‑up exercise at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Asamani praised the quality of play in the opening matches, calling it evidence of the depth of talent at the grassroots level. He urged teams and players to seize the opportunity to develop their skills and pursue opportunities beyond their local communities.
MTN Ghana’s expanded Savannahfest football gala is expected to strengthen community bonds while scouting for the next generation of Ghanaian football talent.
