The death toll from Tuesday’s explosion involving a tricycle carrying suspected dynamite in Hamile, Upper West Region, has risen to three, including a Ghanaian Immigration Service (GIS) officer.
JoyNews Upper West Regional Correspondent Rafiq Salam reports that two civilians died in the blast, bringing the total fatalities to three. Ten other people were injured and are receiving medical treatment.
The explosion occurred on Tuesday, November 3, after security personnel pursued the tricycle along an unauthorised route. Preliminary reports say the occupants failed to stop at a checkpoint, leading to a chase that ended in the explosion.
An immigration officer was killed by the blast, while another officer sustained critical injuries. The incident has heightened tensions in the border community, with residents gathering at the GIS checkpoint demanding the withdrawal of immigration personnel.
Military personnel have been deployed to the area following the incident. Salam reports that the two civilian fatalities were the result of stray bullets fired by military personnel, while the GIS officer was killed by the explosion itself.
In response, the government imposed an 11‑hour curfew on Hamile Township and surrounding communities in the Lambussie District of the Upper West Region.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the source of the suspected dynamite and the circumstances leading to the explosion.
