Welsh actor Matthew Rhys made history at the 2026 Emmy Awards by becoming the first person to win two lead acting prizes in one night. The 47‑year‑old received the Best Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his performance in the psychological thriller The Beast In Me and the Best Lead Actor in a Comedy for his role as the mayor in the supernatural sitcom Widow's Bay.
On stage, Rhys dedicated his second trophy to Wales, saying, "We are a small but mighty nation. This is incredible," and added a heartfelt "Diolch yn fawr iawn," meaning "thank you very much" in Welsh. He noted that coming from a small country gives him pride in putting a flag on the global map.
The ceremony also saw other notable wins: Jean Smart and Allison Janney both added to their Emmy tallies, while Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. The event highlighted a range of performances across drama and comedy, with the drama series The Pitt taking the top drama award.
