A clear majority of Ghanaian voters support President John Dramani Mahama’s decision not to seek a third term in office, according to the latest survey released by Global InfoAnalytics on Monday.
The poll indicates that 65 percent of respondents agree with the president's decision to step down at the end of his current term, while 27 percent disagree and 8 percent expressed no opinion. The results reaffirm strong public backing for the country's constitutional two-term presidential limit.
The findings come amid recent public debate over whether President Mahama should be persuaded to extend his tenure beyond the constitutionally permitted two terms.
However, public sentiment proved more divided when respondents were asked directly about calls by third parties urging the president to run again. Half of those surveyed (50 percent) stated they disagreed with individuals advocating for a third-term bid, while 40 percent supported those calls, and 10 percent remained undecided.
The data suggests that while most Ghanaians approve of President Mahama voluntarily honoring constitutional limits, a notable portion of the electorate would still welcome efforts to prolong his presidency.
Methodology and Scope
The nationwide survey was conducted between July 15 and July 24 using Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI). Global InfoAnalytics targeted 9,242 registered voters drawn from the Electoral Commission’s register across all 16 regions. A total of 7,761 respondents completed the questionnaire, yielding an 84 percent response rate.
The poll carries a 99 percent confidence level with a margin of error of ±1.5 percentage points.
Global InfoAnalytics noted that this exercise is part of a bimonthly longitudinal tracking study designed to follow the same group of respondents over time, contrasting with its regular quarterly face-to-face and online tracking polls.
Under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, presidents are limited to two four-year terms—a mandate widely seen as a fundamental pillar of the nation's democratic stability and smooth transitions of power.
