La General Hospital: Construction Accelerates After Years of Delay

Construction on the new La General Hospital is moving forward after President John Dramani Mahama issued a directive to expedite the project, which had stalled for several years since the original building was demolished in 2019 over structural concerns.

The redevelopment is intended to restore a key health facility for residents of La and nearby communities in the Greater Accra Region. The original hospital was torn down after authorities deemed it unsafe, sparking public worry about access to medical services.

Although plans for reconstruction began under the previous administration, progress halted when the government left office in January 2025. In 2023, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo‑Addo cut the sod for the new hospital, raising hopes that work would resume. However, construction did not begin as expected before Akufo‑Addo’s term ended.

During an inspection on April 24, 2026, President Mahama revealed that the new facility will house 160 beds and is slated for completion in November 2027. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring the project advances at the required pace to meet that target.

With a capacity of 160 beds, the hospital is expected to significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the area once operational. The government’s renewed focus aims to deliver a modern, fully equipped facility for the community.

Observers will watch the project’s progress closely as the deadline approaches, with expectations that the accelerated schedule will bring the much‑needed hospital to fruition in time for the November 2027 opening.
