Keta Senior High Technical School (KETASCO) emerged as champions in both the boys’ and girls’ categories of the Volta Region edition of the KGL Mental‑Slam basketball tournament. The boys’ final saw KETASCO edge the hosts, Mawuli School, by a single point, 22‑21, to lift the trophy and claim bragging rights in the four‑school event.

The competition began with KETASCO securing 25 points in a 42‑point match against Awudome Senior High School, earning a place in the final. Bishop Herman College failed to make an impression, losing both games to Mawuli and Awudome, who finished third.

In the girls’ bracket, KETASCO dominated Mawuli School, defeating them 30‑6 in the final. KETASCO had earlier qualified with a 6‑3 win over Ola Girls Senior High School, ending the tournament with the highest point total of 55.

Ola Girls Senior High School finished third after beating Awudome Senior High School, which had earlier lost to KETASCO 24‑7. The winning teams received trophies and gold medals, while second‑ and third‑placed teams were awarded silver and bronze medals respectively.

Head of Programmes for the KGL Foundation, Nii Ankonu Annorbah‑Sarpei, congratulated the victors and urged the losing teams to keep practising and believing in themselves. He explained that the Mental‑Slam competition is part of a mental health initiative aimed at providing teenagers with information and support, including the establishment of counselling centres and clubs in selected schools.

Students, especially those involved in sports, were cautioned against doping or relying on substances as energy boosters. KETASCO’s triumph highlights the growing emphasis on mental well‑being alongside athletic excellence in Ghanaian schools.
