President John Dramani Mahama announced on Saturday, November 7, at the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival that the Ghana Export‑Import Bank (GEXIM) has been tasked to begin work on a 200‑acre light industrial area at Weta in the Volta Region. The project is expected to create up to 10,000 jobs once fully operational, with an initial employment target of 3,000 people focused on the textile and garment industry.
Speaking to festival attendees, Mahama said the land for the project had already been acquired, clearing the way for construction to start. “We have commissioned the Ghana EXIM Bank to commence work on a Light Industrial Area in the Weta area. 200 acres of land has been acquired. We expect that initially when it starts, it will create some 3,000 jobs and grow eventually to 10,000 jobs when it is fully operational,” he stated.
In the same address, the President outlined timelines for other regional infrastructure, noting that most sections of the Eastern Corridor Road should be finished by the end of 2027 and that construction of the Volivo Bridge over the Southern Volta River will begin in the first quarter of that year. The bridge is intended to serve as a key link on the Eastern Corridor Road, connecting the southern and northern parts of the country.
Mahama also highlighted the challenges of coastal erosion and the repeated displacement of communities along the coastline, urging that no family should have to endure repeated displacements as a result of coastal erosion.
Observers say the Weta industrial hub could become a catalyst for regional economic growth, drawing investors and creating employment opportunities for local communities.
