President John Dramani Mahama announced on Saturday, November 7, that Ghana will allocate GH¢685 million to kick off coastal protection works under the West African Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project (WACA). The money will fund engineering measures such as breakwaters, groynes and revetments, as well as nature‑based solutions like dune fixation, beach replenishment and wetlands restoration.
Speaking at the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival, Mahama said the project would also rehabilitate lagoons and watersheds and provide livelihood support to residents in beneficiary communities. He added that special attention would be given to young people, women and persons with disabilities to ensure they benefit from the economic opportunities created.
"I can answer you directly on this one and confirm that 685 million Ghana cedis has been allocated to commence coastal protection works under the West African Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project, popularly known as WACA," the president said.
Ghana’s coastal communities will soon see a mix of hard engineering and ecological interventions aimed at reducing erosion and strengthening resilience to climate change.
