Dr. Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, told capital‑market stakeholders at the Ghana Stock Exchange that the recent slide in the cedi against the dollar is intentional and within policy limits. The local currency has weakened to around 12 cedis per dollar at some forex bureaus, while the central bank sells at about 11.59 cedis as of Thursday.
Speaking to the floor of the exchange, Asiama urged businesses not to panic, noting that managing an economy inevitably involves adjustments. “Sometimes it’s okay to allow the system to adjust; sometimes it’s deliberate policy to allow the cedi to depreciate a little bit,” he said, adding that the move is part of a strategy to keep the economy moving.
The governor also called on managers across sectors to maintain confidence in the system and appealed to the Central Securities Depository to provide transparent information on investment portfolios, aiming to make the capital market more attractive to potential and young investors.
