World Cup‑winning head coach Luis de la Fuente has agreed to a new contract with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) that will keep him in charge of the national team until 2032. The 65‑year‑old’s previous deal was set to expire in 2028, but the extension will see him steer Spain through the 2030 World Cup, which the country will co‑host with Portugal and Morocco.
De la Fuente took over from Luis Enrique in December 2022 after Spain’s exit in the Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup. Since then the team has lost only twice in 41 competitive matches, winning three trophies including the 2022‑23 UEFA Nations League and the 2024 European Championship. Spain lifted a second World Cup crown in July 2024, beating Argentina 1‑0 in extra time after a 2‑1 win over England in the 2022 European final.
RFEF president Rafael Louzan praised the coach at the World Football Summit in Madrid, saying “His results speak for themselves, as does his work. The public loves and admires him. I offered him an extension because he wasn’t in the top 10 for financial conditions. Now he will be.” Louzan added that the deal would allow De la Fuente to finish his career in Spain after 14 years with the federation.
De la Fuente’s coaching résumé includes nine years in Spain’s youth set‑up, a 2015 U‑19 European Championship, a 2019 U‑21 title, and a silver medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Spain’s next match is on 26 September, when they face England at Wembley in the opening game of the 2026‑27 Nations League.
