On Wednesday, 41‑year‑old Cristiano Ronaldo stood before a packed audience at the Portugal Football Summit, admitting he felt nervous but determined to keep scoring for his country.
Speaking at the Portuguese FA headquarters outside Lisbon, Ronaldo confirmed he is 21 goals shy of the 1,000‑goal landmark he has openly set for himself in Portugal colours.
He said the new era under first‑time national coach Jorge Jesus is a fresh start and that he hopes things go well for the manager.
When asked whether winning the Nations League or reaching four figures mattered more, Ronaldo smiled and chose both, saying, “One goal is to achieve both – reaching 1,000 goals and the national team trying to win this Nations League.”
Ronaldo described a 1,000th goal for Portugal as “the icing on the cake” and a “beautiful story” that would not be the end but a culmination of his career.
He denied being obsessed with the target, insisting he would enjoy every day on the pitch and that the focus remains on scoring goals and helping the team win.
After Portugal’s exit from the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo said talks with the FA and Jesus convinced him to stay, adding, “If the manager doesn’t count on me, I can leave today – no problem at all.”
When pressed about retirement, the veteran said he lives in the moment and is unsure when or if he will finish, leaving the possibility open.
Ronaldo also rebuffed criticism, claiming media outlets have tried to “kill” him for years and that he would not be deterred by any threat.
Portugal last beat Wales 2‑0 in the Euro 2016 semifinal, with Ronaldo and Nani scoring. The upcoming Nations League match marks their first encounter in ten years.
