NMC to Summon Nurse Over Alleged TikTok Livestream of Distressed Pregnant Patient

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is set to summon a nurse for further engagement next week following a TikTok livestream that allegedly featured a visibly distressed pregnant patient. The incident has sparked concerns over patient privacy, professional conduct and the dignity of those receiving medical care.

The Ministry of Health became aware of the matter after a social media post by a concerned individual. Ministry Public Relations Officer Tony Goodman shared on Facebook that he had been reliably informed the nurse would be invited by the Council next week for further engagement.

Facebook user Dickson Assan reported the incident to the Ghana Health Service after discovering the livestream early in the day. He described the host, who appeared to be a nurse, broadcasting the patient while rubbing her back to comfort her. The session attracted inappropriate comments and mockery from viewers, and a viewer’s concern about the broadcast’s appropriateness was met with insults from other participants.

Assan also alleged that the host displayed a Mobile Money (MoMo) number on the livestream and solicited contributions from viewers while the patient was in distress. He questioned the conduct of a healthcare worker who seemed to turn a vulnerable patient’s situation into social media content and a money‑raising opportunity.

Authorities are investigating the matter, and the NMC will determine any disciplinary action against the nurse involved. The case highlights ongoing challenges in safeguarding patient privacy in the digital age.
