During the launch of the Sheroes of Africa Coffee Table Book at The Palms by Eagles in Accra, Executive Director of the J.J. Rawlings Foundation, Ms Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman‑Rawlings, honored her late mother, former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman‑Rawlings, for her lifelong dedication to political, social and economic development across Ghana.
Ms Agyeman‑Rawlings described her mother as a fierce campaigner who believed that true national progress depends on empowering local communities. “She was boots on the ground,” she said. “She did not believe in championing an idea from a distance. She went where the people were, listened, mobilised, organised and acted.” She added that her mother had visited every community in Ghana, leaving a lasting impact beyond her family.
Reflecting on the mid‑1980s, Ms Agyeman‑Rawlings recalled how Nana Konadu supported the 31 December Women’s Movement and the PNDC’s decentralisation policy, travelling nationwide to explain the benefits of local governance. She also encouraged women, including her own organisers, to stand for district‑level elections and public office.
The event, chaired by former Malawian President Dr Joyce Banda, highlighted the book’s role in preserving the histories of 100 prominent African women. Ms Agyeman‑Rawlings praised the project, noting that Nana Konadu’s flame “was never hers alone” and was meant to be passed on.
With her mother’s first anniversary of passing approaching on 23 October 2026, Ms Agyeman‑Rawlings reminded attendees that a purposeful life lives on through the people and places it touches. “A life of purpose does not end with physical departure,” she said. “It continues in the people we inspire, the communities we strengthen, the courage we awaken and the legacy we leave behind.”
